In Paris, love is dead. (Screen shot from https://youtu.be/VYQc_HpbfBI)
*Speaking in a very poor French accent*
Ahhh, Pareeee. City of Light. City of great cheese and fine wine.
City where you go to the market, grab a baguette à la française and even if ce n’est pas terrible, ce n’est pas grave.
City of love.
*Sound of record scratching*
At least … it used to be.
On Monday, authorities began clearing the Pont des Arts bridge of the one million or so locks placed there by couples as a symbol of their love. Although some had been calling for this tradition to stop since it began in 2008, blissful lovers continued to place the “love locks” on the bridge at a steady rate.
And while love can sometimes be heavy metaphorically, in this case it was literally quite heavy. So heavy, in fact, that the bridge had partially collapsed and was under threat of collapsing entirely. Therefore, the locks had to go.
Don’t worry though, lovers. Even if you won’t always have those locks, you’ll still always have Paris.
