We are All Mike Francesa

Sure, it’s pretty easy to make fun of Mike Francesa. He’s a gasbag, he’s got some pretty outdated views on certain subjects, and he’s a New Yorker. If you were a scientist tasked with making an easy target, you’d probably come up with someone who looked a lot like Francesa.

Recently though, Francesa has found a way to make himself an even easier punching bag. Sites like Deadspin have been having a field day with the video of Francesa falling asleep on the air on October 3rd. To make matters worse, this is actually the second time it’s happened.

And while it would be easy for me to join in the chorus of laughter, I’m not going to do it. Not because it’s not hilarious, because of course it is. Just look at his reaction after the mic jolts him awake. It is priceless. He has no idea he’s doing a radio show that’s on air. I mean … oh, right I literally just said I wasn’t going to joke about this.

Still, despite the joy it would bring me to mock Francesa, I’m not going to do it. I’m not going to laugh at Francesa, because I have been Mike Francesa. And, if you’re being honest with yourself, so have you.

Everyone has had that day at work where you’re not feeling as awake as you might like to feel. Either you didn’t sleep well or you stayed up watching some show you shouldn’t have or you forgot to drink your coffee. Whatever the reason, around 11 a.m. all you want to do is take a nap. As much as you fight to keep looking at that computer screen, you do the head bob. You wait for a minute and look around to see if anyone noticed. We’ve all been there; we just haven’t had a camera putting us on television while it happened.

So let he who has not been sleepy at work cast the first snarky comment. And, come on, if you had to listen to calls from a bunch of insufferable New York Giants fans talking about how much Eli Manning could use another receiver, you’d have a hard time staying awake too.
