The internet’s favorite cat now has a movie deal. Broken Road Productions (the same company that made “Paul Blart Mall Cop” and “Jack and Jill,” so not a strong track record there) has optioned the rights to make a movie based on Grumpy Cat’s character.
Grumpy Cat originally became internet famous as a meme. Even before the movie deal was announced, though, the Grumpy Cat brand was already strong. She has a book set to come out from Chronicle Books as well as a calendar and t-shirts. The cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, has already appeared on “Today,” “Good Morning America,” and “Anderson Cooper Live,” so she won’t be fazed with all the publicity interviews she’ll undoubtedly have to do for the movie.
As much as we could lament the unoriginality and desperation in Hollywood these days — and, boy, does this reek of desperation — I want a different question answered: Who will voice Grumpy Cat? I vote Tina Fey or, if they decide to make Grumpy Cat a guy, Bill Murray. What do you guys think?
